Ungrateful Black-White Girl
Nia writes a sequel to "Angry Black-White Girl" in which she confronts a white researcher wanting to interview her because Nia feels tired of constantly feeling like someone's research project as a mixed race individual. Nia incorporates more theoretical approaches to this issue and it works really nicely when fused with her personal stories of heading off to a new school and embracing the transition. She gives suggestions on being a good white ally, and criticizes the standards of what it means to be visibly queer. Another excellent issue by Nia, and it seems as if every issue keeps getting better and better. Seriously, Amazing! BUY THIS BUY THIS BUY THIS NOW!

Wait Five Minutes, It Will Change
Lewis (The Next Body) gives us hir latest zine about the problems, dreams and hopes that come with working for social justice. Lewis shares hir time spent vollunteering in post-Katrina New Orleans, while problematizing the "well-meaning" white folks from outside of the community that come to help the relief effort, but instead create new hegemonic power structures and disregard the community's efforts towards rebuilding. This zine is super smart, powerful, hopeful, revealing, intimate and demanding your attention.

Your Pretty Face is Going Straight to Hell #3
Tukru finally solves her homeless and unemployment woes by landing a job at a toy shop and finding some subsidized housing. My favorite parts of this zine were the photos from Tukru's art exhibit entitled, "Chubby Princess", and her drunken type-writing about frustrations within the art world and attempting to maintain her own creative output. And, of course, there are great recipes at the end of the issue as always. Treats for all!

Your Pretty Face is Going Straight to Hell #6
Tukru delivers again with a new visually stunning issue of her zine! She writes about how she and her boyfriend finally moved in together and the money and bureaucratic struggles they face. She also reflects back on the friends she had when she first moved from Finland to England and how these days good friends are hard to come by. As someone forced into adulthood, I can relate to the difficulties of maintaining friendships and even discovering what to do for fun that is no longer completely destructive or potentially harmful. And this issue all wraps up with some sweet ass chili recipes!

Your Pretty Face is Going Straight to Hell #7
Tukru and her boyfriend head to Finland to reconnect with family. She hangs out with her mom and brother, soon realizing that Finland is no longer her home. This is a straight up documentation of her travels in the glorious artistic style of all of Tukru's zines. Nice to look at and, of course, nice to read.

Your Pretty Face is Going Straight to Hell #8
Tukru vents about the shittiess of her job. From her creepy power-tripping boss, to the awkward collar shirt uniforms, to the lack of life she experiences outside of her job. There's frustration and then the bright side of her job in the mini zine attached to this issue. She also relents about her boyfriend's bad luck, and what it is like to have a partner who is going through a rough patch. As always, visually stimulating and artistically inspiring.

Your Secretary #2/ Heaven Street #1
I am super impressed with Jami (No Better Voice) and Shaun's (Larceny) new split zine! It is an amazing collision of two sarcastic and occasionally hopeful minds. Jami's side (Your Secretary) goes over the difficult process of coming out to parents who continue to enforce a policy of secrecy and silence about her sexuality and her brother's tragic death. It is about broken hearts and moving forward in such a nicely written way that my description cannot even do it justice. Shaun's side focuses on leaving Detroit for Seattle, missing the quirks of his hometown and finding new oddities in a new city. Super cool!

Your Secretary #4/ There Is No Magnificent Creature #1
Another fabulous "Your Secretary" split! Both sides deal with deaths of friends over the years. It is an honest look at the conflicting emotions we have after a friend has passed due to suicide or recklessness. Both sides are told in a narrative style, detailing the funerals and memories of the deceased. Really nicely put together. Get this is you know what is good for you!

Zephyr, Volume 1
Don't let the minimalist cover throw you off. This zine is pretty complicated in terms of the mingling of voices, time lines and stories throughout our author's life. Jumping from page to page through various conversations and situations surrounding heartbreak, traveling, feminism and sanity. Written in quotations and prose, this zine left me with a strange feeling of understanding as if I was this person at some point in my life, or we all were or we all will be. This is honesty and confusion brought together by messy handwriting and a typewriter that still works. It is hard to describe; not easy to forget.
